Taxpayer Funding for Maryland Abortions

So often you hear abortion proponents saying things like, "If you don't like abortion, don't get one," or "It's a private choice between a doctor and a woman."

But did you know that abortion is quite a public issue, being paid for by public funding?

According to the 2006 Maryland Budget Annual Report (which is available on the mlis.state.md.us website), $2,300,000 of State funding in 2005 paid for women in Maryland to abort 3,681 of their children (by contrast, 1,363 Marylanders died in 2005 due to any kind of accident). That means our tax dollars contributed directly to the killing of innocent Marylanders in the womb and the injuring of their mothers.

Were these abortions paid for by the State because the mothers' lives were in danger? Was it because their physical health was seriously threatened by the pregnancy? Was it because they were victims of sexual offences? No. These reasons accounted for only 7 of the 3,681 state-procured abortions, or 0.19%.

The fact is that Maryland taxpayers paid for 3,674 abortions in order to protect the women's "mental" health.

You are encouraged to contact your Maryland State Legislators and tell them you want them to end the state funding of abortions and to pass legislation that not only protects the innocent unborn lives, but also gives women in crisis pregnancies the resources to care for themselves and their children.

One final thought to keep in mind: These public-funded abortions only accounted for 12% of the estimated 30,000 abortions performed in Maryland in 2005. There are many aspects to pro-life efforts, and removing public funding is but one of them.

Yeah, they want the government to "stay out" of health and safety regulations, informed consent, etc., but they want you to pony up the dough.

Were I a Maryland citizen....
