The Metropolitan Womens Health abortion facility has closed, according to pro-life activists who regularly pray at the facility. This reduces the number of known abortion facilities in Maryland to twenty.
The word is that the man who ran the practice, Dr. Rufus Rosser, Jr., has retired to Flordia.
Dr. Rosser was also the abortionist at Metropolitan Womens Heath abortion facility on Benning Rd. in Washington, DC. It is unknown at this time whether or not that facility has closed.
If anyone has more information on these developments, leave a comment on this blog or send me an e-mail at joe@defendlife.org.

The Insane Outrage over Michael Vick's Dog Fighting
The public outcry over Michael Vick's dog-fighting allegations has reached a deafening roar. While I agree that dog-fighting is a sick, immoral practice that should be stopped, the noise of the protesters and opinion-writers is out of place in light of the abortion holocaust going on in America today.
4,000 people are being poisoned, burned, ripped apart while still living, or expelled from the womb by harsh chemicals every day in America. They have everything in common with us, since every one of us was once in their place, still human but at an earlier stage of development. We have infinitely more in common with a human zygote than with an adult canine.
But where is the outrage over abortion? Abortion providers are performing much worse acts of violence than one who supports dog-fighting. Why the silence?
Dr. Alveda King, niece of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has this to say about the Michael Vick situation (from http://www.christiannewswire.com/news/924673705.html):
"The appalling cruelty to dogs described in the complaint against Michael Vick immediately reminds me of another kind of cruelty that is not only not punished, but is protected by our authorities," said Dr. King. "I'm talking about the incredible cruelty suffered by babies who are stabbed, have limb torn from limb, or have their skulls crushed in the womb by abortionists. The pain these children endure is undoubtedly excruciating, yet we close our eyes and look the other way in the name of 'choice.'"
Perhaps if Vick had chosen to take up a part-time job as an abortionist rather than a dog-fighting promoter he would be in a lot less trouble today.

The Pro-Life Event of the Century
As it was in the mid-19th Century, our nation is at a critical point in its history. As with the issue of legalized slavery, how we emerge from the scourge of legalized abortion will determine the future of the United States.
Will abortion be legal in the United States fifty years from now? Absolutely not. Either people of goodwill will give a voice to the voiceless victims of abortion or the tyrants will continue to push their culture of death and despair. If the former happens, human life will be protected from conception to a natural death in America and we will be well on our way to a culture of life and love. If the latter happens, America will cease to exist as a nation. A nation that fails to protect the innocent is a nation that will not last: Babylon, Egypt, Rome, the USSR, and even Western Europe today.
We need to stand up for the dignity inherent in every human person and we need to fight for the basic right to life everyone deserves. We need to work tirelessly to not only make those in power understand how wrong abortion is, but also to truly care for women and families. We need to work toward a culture that respects motherhood and fatherhood and sees children as gifts, not diseases.
This brings me to what will be THE pro-life event of the 21st Century - 40 Days for Life. The name is humble, but humility is its strength. The concept is amazingly simple, but it will change our nation and ultimately the world. Pro-life groups from around the nation are joining forces and reaching out to all people of goodwill to join in the 40 Days for Life campaign.
Here's how it works. For 40 days this fall, September 26th through November 4th, we will unite across our nation in prayer and fasting, constant vigil, and community outreach. While being coordinated at the national level, this is at its core a local event. We will have community prayer events and encourage all types of fasting, but the most visible beacon will be the 24 by 7 vigil that will be maintained outside of selected abortion facilities during the entire 40 days.
Defend Life, Inc. (www.DefendLife.org) is taking the lead for the campaign in Maryland and will be sending out specific details. Call me or send me an e-mail at joe@defendlife.org to receive updates on this campaign and to volunteer to participate. You should also sign up for the campaign at www.40daysforlife.com to receive updates from the national level.
The success of the campaign will be dependent upon us working at the local level to get people to join us. You can do anything for 40 days; now is the time to get involved.

Archbishop Edwin O'Brien - Welcome to Baltimore!
It was announced today that Archbishop Edwin O'Brien, currently head of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, will be the new Archbishop of Baltimore. Here is a message he wrote in 2000 on Pro-Life Sunday indicating his dedication to the pro-life cause:
ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES, USA
Office of the Archbishop
October 1, 2000
Pro-Life Sunday
To All Priests and People of Our Archdiocese
Dear Friends in Christ:
As our Nation approaches this first national election of the new millennium, I write to you, our faithful Catholic people in the Armed Services and Veterans Administration in the hope that you will take an active interest in the issues of the election and cast your responsible vote on November 7th.
In November, 1998, the General Meeting of our National Conference of Catholic Bishops approved a document, "Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics." Last September, the Administrative Board of the same conference again spoke out on the issues of political responsibility when it published "Faithful Citizenship: Civic Responsibility for a New Millennium." Both documents stress the urgency of this significant hour in our Nation's history. As we prepare to elect leaders on the national, state and local level, I think it timely to be reminded of the moral obligation that is ours to influence the course of our Country. When deployments, distant assignments or extended hospitalization precludes a return to a home voting place, absentee ballots offer our military and Veterans Administration personnel an effective means to exercise their rights and fulfill their moral obligations.
Catholics in our Armed Forces have pledged their lives in the defense of our Nation and in promoting worldwide peace and justice. They and their families have special concerns in electing the officials who will guide the destiny of our Country. Their pledge to self-sacrifice in support of our national defense should be complemented in their making every effort to elect public servants who will maintain the ideals and values which our military is sworn to uphold.
Understandably, service members have very special concerns in some matters of public policy. These concerns are not linked to a particular political party but rather are focused on electing officials at all levels who understand and appreciate the sacrifices being made daily by Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines Coast Guard personnel and their families.
They have every right to be concerned, for example, that adequate care be given those who have served in uniform and are now in need of the medical treatment. Those now on active duty should receive adequate compensation so that their families will be fed, sheltered and educated at standards corresponding to the valuable contributions our military renders our Nation. Professionally, our Services should be assured of sufficient personnel to carry out their mission. Their leadership must address the repetitive and lengthy deployments which are increasingly destructive of family life. They should be equipped with materiel and supplies sufficient and up to date for the task.
More basic still, those who serve our Country at home and in so many overseas stations should examine closely the foreign policies being advocated by candidates for national executive and legislative offices. The world's most powerful nation must be all the more sensitive to a just, balanced and reasonable employment of our military power, while encouraging other countries to engage in regional peace keeping operations.
Catholics in the service of our Nation are, of course, citizens with concerns for the common good of all Americans. We are the most economically prosperous society on earth but can we say that we are living the message of the Gospel to care for the least privileged in our own society? We must. We must also care about conditions which threaten the moral fabric of country. Our bishops' statements remind us that there are any number of moral concerns facing our electorate:
- almost one in five of our pre-school children is growing up in poverty;
- basic health care and dignified housing are still out of the reach of many, and various forms of racial, ethnic and religious discrimination divide our citizens;
- poor families are not free to send their children to schools of choice;
- violent and life-threatening conditions have become commonplace in many of our neighborhoods and schools, as even the very young are drawn into America's drug culture;
- the death penalty, which our Holy Father calls both cruel and unnecessary.
But among these and many other matters of moral concern, one subject stands out as preeminent --foundational to every other. And that is the sacred dignity of human life and the right to life itself !
Nowhere is the disregard for human life more heinous than in abortion and the increasing acceptance of euthanasia. Indeed, the infanticide of partial birth abortion is promoted as a right even by some Catholic politicians pandering for votes at the price of killing of the innocent. It is critical for Catholics in our Armed Forces and Veteran Administration to realize that abortion and euthanasia strike at the foundation of every other human right. Laws that promote the right to kill innocent human life are unjust, not to be obeyed and, surely, not to be promoted by any elected official who holds human life sacred.
In the words of our Catholic bishops:
"No public official, especially one claiming to be a faithful and serious Catholic, can responsibly, advocate for or actively support direct attacks on innocent human life."
And to the voting Catholic, our bishops advise:
"... (W)e urge our fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically- and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest."
Every election is an opportunity to remind our believing Catholics that we are not second class citizens. Our voices must be heard, our convictions must be registered in the voting booths. Our Catholic faith and our American tradition demand that we speak out when evil is enshrined in law and that we use every moral means to change such law.
One day we shall be judged accordingly -- surely by God and most probably by history.
Thank you for all you do each day to witness to the surpassing value of human life.
In the Lord,
+ Edwin F. O'Brien
Archbishop for the Military Services, USA

Absolutely No Exceptions
Absolutely No Exceptions
Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life
One of my favorite pro-life shirts is the one that says, "100% Pro-life, Without Exception, Without Compromise, Without Apology."
That's exactly the stand each of us is called to take; in fact, it is the only pro-life stance. Abortion is an intrinsic evil. It is evil by its very nature, and that evil is not altered by circumstances. To put it another way, if one lived for a million years -- or forever -- and did nothing but try to imagine circumstances that could justify a single abortion, one could never imagine one. It simply does not exist.
Every abortion, no matter what the circumstances, contradicts the law of God.
The circumstances in which a child is conceived -- whether in love or by rape -- can never make an abortion morally permissible. The circumstances in which the pregnancy advances -- whether with sickness or health -- can never justify the direct killing of a child. Every child, starting at the single cell stage, is a human person. The children conceived in rape and incest must have equal protection. The children of mothers with medically complicated pregnancies must have equal protection. Our duty to these children is absolute, and admits of no exceptions. To say that an abortion might sometimes be permissible is like saying an act of terrorism, of child abuse, of rape, or of Satanism is sometimes permissible.
There is no Court, King, Governor, President, Parliament, or Prince anywhere on earth or any time in history who can issue any decision, decree or declaration that would justify even a single abortion. When human lawmakers attempt to do so, the "law" that results is not simply a bad law; it is, in fact, no law at all, and carries neither authentic juridical validity nor any obligation to obey it.
But why, then, don't we stop all abortions today? What are we waiting for? Obviously there are limits to what we can do. Every abortion is wrong. But as I dissuade one woman from doing it, many other women don't hear me. As I speak to one group, there are countless groups not hearing me. And even if I blockade the door to an abortion clinic, what about all the other clinics that are operating at the same time? Lawmakers are not the only ones who face limits in how many babies they can protect today. We all do.
Yet while we acknowledge practical limitations, we can never limit the principle nor lose sight of the goal. No abortion is permissible, and every child must be protected.
Nor is it permissible for each state to decide on its own whether or not to protect the lives of the unborn. That makes no more sense than letting each state decide on whether to protect the lives of the born!
Life can be confusing, and the temptation to compromise with evil can be great. But the teaching about abortion is as clear and direct as it can be, and is best summed up with one word: never.
