In this article, Fr. Mellace lays out two very compelling reasons why everyone has the responsibility and duty to do all they can to end abortion. It all boils down to love of God (abortion pains Him deeply) and love of neighbor (abortion hurts people and its effects are felt throughout all of society, especially the guilt of the sin).
My Reasons for Fighting Against Abortion
Some people will say that I am against a procured abortion for the horror that I feel before the slaughter of innocent babies in the wombs of their mothers. Others will say that I am against this crime in view of my obligations as a priest and member of the Catholic Church to condemn it. Still others will say that I am against a procured abortion because it is an intrinsic evil and bad of its own nature and therefore justified under absolutely no circumstances at all.
While all the above are true, they are not the main reasons why I am against abortion. There are two principal ones that stir me passionately against this great insanity of a crime. The first is that this evil crushes God’s very heart and spirit. Ever since 1967, I have never been able to pray to Jesus in peace before the tabernacle without Him nagging me to no end and repeating in my ears the same constant and pleading words: “Get rid of abortion! Get rid of abortion! Get rid of abortion! It wounds my heart with an especially deep and excruciating pain.”

If I went to pray to Him again, I would be hearing the same words over and over again. He counted on me to take away these thorns in His heart coming from this horrendous murder of defenseless lives. I felt like a husband who could no longer bear to see his wife dying from cancer and goes in search of some medicine to cure her or relieve her pain.
The second reason for being against abortion is a personal and selfish one. God is preparing a chastisement for humanity on global proportions never before seen in the history of the human race. Knowing about this, I rather wish that I had been born in a different epoch of history. When the punishment comes, it will affect everyone, whether good or bad. It did no good for a person to complain to God and declare that he was not part of the Nazi regime in Hitler’s Germany and therefore should not be taken to a concentration camp. When the chastisement of World War II came, it struck everyone, whether saints or sinners. Religious, as well as non-religious people were gassed to death.
The only two sins I know of that would provoke a punishment of catastrophic proportions is abortion and homoerotic behavior. A father can tolerate many failings and weaknesses in his child, but if this son were to really go beyond the limits, the father would no longer support this, but lose his patience and respond with a heavy spanking. There are two types of wrongs that God supports, but one causes Him to release His powerful arm against humanity. Our daily sins are forgiven by God with much patience, love, mercy and understanding. God loves the sinners who are always trying to better themselves. Iniquitous acts are cold, heavy, serious, pre-meditated and pre-calculated crimes that subject one to the fires of hell. God, in a tremendous attitude of mercy, still tolerates the iniquities of mankind and practices a long patience with us.
Abominations, however, are the types of sins insupportable to God. They are sins of the worst kind which attract severe punishment. Abortion is an abomination before God’s eyes. It evokes his fiery justice and anger on mankind. Knowing all this, I really want to save my skin and the skin of others as well. If I do fight abortion, it is because I do not want to see myself, my town, valley, State, country or family and friends destroyed in the Divine upheaval provoked by this crime.

Abortion is not a private matter between the doctor and the mother, but involves the chastisement and destruction of our own lives and society as well. If a person enters a public swimming pool without a doctor’s approval, his disease could spread to all the other people present also. Abortion is a disease that affects not only the abortionists, but all of us who live in their midst and are threatened in our very existence and peace by their abominable activities.
Sin has serious social as well as private implications and consequences. Why should I suffer a Divine chastisement because of some blind vultures who have the shameless audacity and sole desire to live off of human carnage and insult God to His Face? Not only will they be swept away by the deluge of God's anger, but will drag along the rest of us with them. It is for this reason that fence sitters and even those who might even agree with abortion, nonetheless should ardently fight against it and eliminate it from our communities. If the fire department tells me I am not to make any barbecues because the weather is warm and dry, I will obey, despite what I might think of barbecues. Safety and the conservation of my environment must precede my personal interests or ideas and tastes.

I respect and agree with Fr. Mellace's words. I know that I have not so much as prayed for an end to abortion although I feel it is the worst thing a person can do to another. I hope that God has mercy. I hope that my forthcoming prayers can lead me to an effective way to combat this scourge.
Amen! Fr. Anthony Mellace has hit the nail on the head when he identifies the sinful acts of the abortionists and their supporters as well as the sinful acts of homosexuals and their supporters as an abomination before God. I pray for God's mercy on our nation. My only consolation is that God's time is not ours, and His mercy and patience is perfect. After 30 years of praying, marching, writing letters and praying some more, I have to admit I wonder if God is not preparing something to correct this evil. Lord Jesus, have Mercy on us!
I can identify with Fr. Mellace's reasoning on opposing abortion to avert or at the very least mitigate the chastisement. Who among those keenly aware of the state of the world would not want the worst part of it visited on us. And who doesn't feel that perhaps we haven't individually really done our best to oppose it because we've been hesitant to be outspoken when we needed to be?

This world has spit in God's face and destroyed an entire generation of our children, HIS GIFTS to us. The magnitude of that is hard to grasp. I keep wondering WHY people are so blind and their hearts so hardened. May God Bless and Keep you safe so that you may continue to be a voice for those who cannot yet defend themselves.
I agree with everything you say, Fr. Anthony. That being said, many women are led into abortion by prior sexual and physical abuse. Of this I can attest, working with Rachels Vineyard ministries.
www.rachelsvineyard.org 70-80% of women thru our weekends have suffered prior to devaluing their pregnancy, and are seemingly doomed to re-create prior traumas over and over until someone LOVES them into seeing their value. So don't be so quick to judge the woman, before you've seen why she's culpable. And long live the Theology of the Body!

Father Mellace, you have perfectly expressed my thoughts, feelings, desires about the intrinsic evil of abortion child murder and the perversion of homosexuality. God is immutable in His essence, He does not change, and, just as He has chastised His people Israel when they sinned against Him, and has punished mankind throughout history, so He will surely strike the world with His mighty Arm of Justice for the crimes of abortion murder of His innocent unborn children. The destruction of the Twin Towers is the first installment of the chastisement of America, followed by Katrina's devastation of Louisiana, the great tsunami in Asia, and the increasing violence of many tornados, floods, huricanes, are all signs of the wrath of God upon this nation and the world. We must pray the very powerful prayer of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which Jesus gave to St. Faustina, fast, go to confession, Mass and Communion, and hope we will mitigate the great chastisement to come. We must weep and mourn the evils of abortion child murder and homosexuality. May God have mercy on us all.
Thank you Fr. Mellace for your powerful words. We must speak the truth and I encourage you to ask your fellow priests to talk about this more from the pulpit. Because it is only mentioned on occasion people do not think it is abominable. They do not understand the wounds that have been inflicted upon God by this horrible sin. We must also get to the root of this problem which is birth control. I used an IUD and birth control for years causing many spontaneous abortions. May God have mercy on my soul but also on our priests who see "peace and justice" as the banner to carry but leave the little ones far behind.
I agree as well. May God have Mercy on us all. When are people going to wake up! I am so sick and tired of pro-choice people saying it's ok to kill unborn children and then think animals (who we do have to treat well as well) are more important. We need to go back to old fashioned values. They worked well for many, many years. I am also sick of the homosexual agenda. When only 2-4% of the population is homosexual, it will NEVER be considered normal. And quite frankly I DON'T want to know what they do behind closed doors. PLEASE go back into your closets. Think of the millions of couples who would give their right arms for a baby, but there simply aren't any to adopt because they are all put to death. How very sad.
The punishment has already arrived. I heard a doctor chick on the radio say that she noticed that all of her patients with aggressive breast cancer also had multiple abortions. She also said birth control was a steriod just like body builders use. These steriods are dangerous and also cause cancer. She question why we outlaw it for male athletes but give it out in mass doses to young girls. She tried to talk about it in the medical community but nobody wanted to hear it. Too much money to be made on abortions and birth control.
The Chastisement started years ago. War is often a punishment for sin, we are stuck in a war without any real way to win or to extract ourselves without doing even more harm. Financial collapse is also a consequence and we are in the middle of a huge and quite devastating financial downturn. Division is another conseqeunce and our country has never been so divided.
Sadly, the solution is on hands, we need to turn back to God, yet people don't get it, they think they can turn to a political party candidate to bring great change and relief...it won't happen!

In these Church-approved apparitions, Our Lady gives similar warnings, and remedies, for the evils we face.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Fr. Mellace! Man doesn't know that it's going to be punished for its sins against life-not only abortion, but the abomination that is homosexuality. (I agree with what Anonymous said about homosexuals...PLEASE go back into your closets!) I pray that there will be more priests like you, Father, who are going to call 'a spade a spade' and speak out against these two evils! PS-I live in Upstate New York, and I went to your ordination in Rome in 1983...
It's so frightenly true. We have to do EVERYTHING we can to help these scared women in crisis pregnancies, to truly believe in themselves, that it's ok to have their baby. It's way too easy in the U.S. to get an abortion, most women (and men) don't really give themselves time to even THINK about what they're doing, and before they do, the abortion's over and done. Only then does the deluge of truth and guilt hit them. As pro-lifers we all have to support and really be there for them, b/c many times the guy takes off. Another interesting but scarey fact, did you know the leading cause of death for pregnant women in the U.S. is MURDER!! That speaks volumes, how horrible. So many of these women are desperate, they so need our help, to hang in there, to help them believe in themselves, and to have their babies. So many abort b/c they are scared to death, panicked, and ashamed.

The cycle of man's sinfulness just leads from one sin to another (sexual abuse.. low self-esteem, alcohol abuse, abortion, drugs, prostitution, homosexuality.. the whole mess!!). It shows how satan really is a roaring lion, seeking in every way to destroy us, and sexual abuse is by FAR THE MOST destructive, terrible seed to plant in a child's soul. It leads to so many other dysfunctions and sins later in life.
Please people, we all must open our eyes to the ugly truth. This world is a MESS b/c of ALL of our sins. We must put our energy into LOVING, not judging, especially for those who pursue and seek repentance. Like Mother Teresa once said, 'Stay out of Gods way.' And let us also pray for those who stubbornly persist in their sins, that the scales fall from their eyes and they receive the truth.

Look at all the gang violence, school shootings, murderous parents, etc. Kids have become unwanted burdens and they feel it. That's why so many of them are depressed and on psych meds. It all stems from abortion.

Just as it was attempted by the angels of darkness, who have lost their influence in the Heavenly Realms, but who have now been working their dark deeds through the members of the human race among you, who have chosen to work for the forces of darkness.
Among your countries and regions, you will begin to see that chaos and turmoil will begin to accelerate and that peaceful negotiations will break down and fail. For the intentions of those in control is not what the Lord foresees for the future of mankind.
Therefore, there will be great turmoil in the world starting with the deterioration of your economies; followed by the failure of crops worldwide; followed by the inevitable chaos and destruction that results for greed and corruption in high places…..

I thought Kathy said it perfectly: "may everyone lose the scales from their eyes concerning these sins" I noticed that our dear Pope Benedict chose this year to be the year of St. Paul. Imagine what he accomplished once the scales were removed from his eyes. May St. Paul interecede for this polluted world.
I am not here to defend homosexual activity, but I ask questions about your depictions of certain people. Would you say that every single person who commits homosexual activity is satanic? Does every single such person go up to a mountaintop to shake his or her fist in God's face? Do they really think, I shake my fist in God's face? Or are some of them misguided and confused and desperate for affection and acceptance? Should these people be pushed into closets and never be helped to live better lives? Would you say that every single person who has sentiments of civil rights, albeit misguided, is satanic? What about Neo-nazi skinheads? What about those who deny the Nazi Holocaust? What about Islamic fundamentalists? Would you consider them to be satanic and abominable? Thank you for allowing me to ask these questions.
I am post abortive and wholly support the prolife position of the Church. I had to learn the hard way from the Lord the gravity of my sins. I thank you Fr. Mellace for the gift of your life to the priesthood, from which, I have been granted reconciliation with Jesus Christ. I serve, I serve, I serve, I am not perfect, yet I try. Some wounds run deep.

In 1972, New York State led the way when the state legislature passed the infamous abortion rights act. At the time, I said to my wife, "Oh, the bishops of the country will come down hard on these guys for allowing abortion." We have to remember that this was a time when the bishops had a lot more influence in the lives of their flocks. Yet, most of them said nothing. I can remember our pastor valiently speaking out against this infamous action before it was made into law. Yet, I heard nothing from out local bishop. We all know that over the years, the evil of abortion has becamoe entrenched in this nation, and over the years, the influence of our bishops has declined to practically nothing. So, now, when they no longer can wield the influence they once had, they are trying to stop the deluge of abortion. I blame those bishops of yesteryear for not stemmimg the tide of abortion in our country. Of course, today, we no longer have those older "do-nothing" bishops around, and today's bishops have merely a fraction of the great influence that bishops once had. The only thing we can do is to pray and vote for good pro-life candidates for office. God help America!
Anyone with one eye and half a brain can see, and know that somewhere along the line the USA will have either make reparation for the horror of Abortion, or we will have to deal with the punishment that God will definently send to us.
I say this because all of History is on my side. One need only look to Both the old and New Testaments to see when the people repented God forgave, and withdrew his anger, but in most cases the people still had to somehow pay the price for what they did. There are a countles number of books on Prophecy concerning the coming Chaistisement and the horror of it.. I strongly suggest the Catholic people petition their own Bishops in each Diocese to allow them to make public repartation as a whole people each year and privately every day of the year.
We have for example Pope John Paul asking for forgiviness for all the evil that Catholics have done in the past 2000 yrs and he apoligize for it why cant we apologize to God by making reparation for Abortion?
Why cant we do the same, but do penance ,and get ourselves back to a voluntary day once a week of penance ( like not eating meat on Friday for example) There is an old saying if you want to dance you must pay the fidler.
Accuse no one but pray, and make reparation for all especially for the sin of Abortion.. If the good God sees our honest effort he will very much lessen the Horror that is to come in a few short years..And I assure you it will come.

I agree with Fr. Mellace's article, and I thank him for his firm words of truth. I personally feel that it is a moral obligation for all of us, but especially (as a counseling student)anyone who is a service provider -- be it a religious person, counselor, doctor, law services, social worker policymaker to not only stand against social atrocities but do all that can possibly be done to prevent, deter, and fight them. I would go a step further and include such atrocities other than abortion as euthenasia, unethical stem cell research, animal cruelty, religious persecution, and cruelty to others due to ethnicity, culture or race. Again thanks for posting truth, Father Mellace.
I have a few thoughts on Fr. Mellace's article. First, I agree. I especially agree if a person is a social service provider. Counselors, Religious(no matter what denomination)Doctors, Police Officers, Politicians and Lawyers of all kinds, Caregivers of various sorts: these men and women, more than anyone else have a moral obligation to re-direct, pray for and stand against abortion, homoerotic behavior, euthenasia, animal cruelty, religious persecution, and other absolutely abhorrent crimes against God. Thank you for your firm words Father Mellace. May we all wake up and open our eyes before it is too late, lest we need to build an Ark or protect each other from ethnic cleansing......
An earlier person commented about chastisements and Medjugorje. The same is true of Garabandal in Spain. Joey Lamangino was told, through one of the visionaries, that he would see the miracle when it occurs at Garabandal and he turned 80 this year. The Virgin Mary made it clear that he would be healed (he is blind) and that this would not be "spiritual " sight but real vision. Therefore it indicates he would still be alive when all this occurs. But before the miracle would come a world-wide warning similar to what Saint Faustina describes in her diary. Only after the miracle comes the chastisement.
There are several things that seem to indicate and support the possibility of a worldwide chastisement in the near future.
I saw a fantastic bumper sticker today that read:
"God, why don't you send people to cure cancer, bring world peace, and to end poverty?"

With the election looming in November, give careful thought to the positions of the candidates take on abortion. I'm always hearing about the black vote from a positive and negative viewpoint. However, now is the time for us to think and act within the frameword of the Catholic doctrine that teaches against abortion.
Father's article was quite good. I would remind him however that there are FOUR sins that cry out to God for vengeance - Killing the innocent and sodomy which he mentioned (though traditionally theologians have seen this as refering not only to homosexual acts but contraceptive heterosexual ones as well), and also depriving the laborer of his just wage and oppressing the poor.
I fear that we Catholics pick the first two if we're more "conservative", and the last two if we're more "liberal". We need to beware of and speak out against ALL four.

I know Catholics who go to mass receive Jesus and agree with abortion. Our policians are part of the problem, too.
I think the males (boy) agree with it because they do not want to take responsibility for their actions, too.
I recently had a conversation with an older man from Mississippi and he said agrees with abortion because he witnessed women having many children and did not take care of them and that the children are unruly. This man said he does not want his rights messed with... it took a long time for him to get them and he is not about to give them up.
I was surprised at his answers for two reasons:
1. Abortion is not a human right
2. Abortion has not changed the behavior of women in Mississippi or in any other state.
I think the problem is that boys of all ages are very much under-educated on conception.
Thank you Father for reminding us of this great evil. Some of my relatives think and are stuck in this idea that wars are greater evil. Somehow I am unable to place in their minds that abortion is a personal sin and that wars start because abortion started first in our culture.
In a more personal light I have let go of my commitment to pray the Rosary specifically for this intention. I pledge to start over and pray with moments of reflection for this cause.
