Pray for Lauren Richardson, Being Starved to Death in Delaware

Lauren Richardson, a 23-year old non-dying citizen of Delaware, is in grave danger of being dehydrated and starved to death by order of the state, against the wishes of her father.

Recently, Delaware Court of Chancery Master Sam Glasscock, III (contact info below), ordered that Lauren's feeding tube shall be removed and she will be left to die of dehydration and starvation (similar to Terri Schiavo in 2005).

From a website dedicated to Lauren and her struggles:

"Lauren Marie Richardson is a twenty-three year old woman who suffered an anoxic brain injury after an accident on August 28, 2006.

"Lauren gave birth to a baby girl during this ordeal, and has not been allowed to see her child. This little baby girl needs a chance to know her mother. We appeal to each person with compassion and love to understand why we wish to bring Lauren home and care for her."

The Delaware Pro-Life Coalition is leading the fight to keep Lauren from being murdered by order of the state. They organized a prayer vigil yesterday afternoon near the Arbors Rehab Center in New Castle, DE [map]. If you would like to help out, the point of contact is Bess McAneny, 302-593-7876, bmcaneny@aol.com.

Guest Column: Whose Side Are You On?

This is the third in a series of columns by my friend, Anna Maria Agolli:

Whose Side Are You On?
by Anna Maria Agolli

Right or wrong? Or is it really right team, wrong team? Bill Clinton, the same one who legalized partial birth abortion like he owed the devil his soul, used to be pro-life, you know. And George Bush, the father of our current president and a former U.S. President, used to be pro-choice. Jesus had a zealot among his apostles, but was Jesus a Republican?

Republicans have a general “pro-life” stand, yet some poor would apply to Republicans our Lord’s gripe against the Pharisees and say that they place heavy loads on people’s backs and then won’t lift a finger to help them. And the Democratic party used to be the party of the Catholic Church because of its concern for the poor and disadvantaged – the issues with which the Church was immediately concerned when abortion hadn’t yet pushed its way to front and center as the unspeakable emergency – yet the Democratic party has now taken a general stand in favor of abortion. And not in spite of its concern for the disadvantaged but indeed because of it.

How does one remain wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove? Obedience. I vote by the issue only. I analyze the candidates’ record and promises to assess what will best effect what is right according to God’s known priorities. I don’t automatically vote for the pro-life party when there is no pro-life candidate at all. But do you say, the parties, strategy, are a necessity? Yes, organized collective effort can help us achieve important goals, but do we make just use of such alignments or do we allow them to dictate what we do and who we are? We vote candidates into office so that they can work for us, don’t we? That a candidate gets voted into office one vote AND one issue at a time AND because what we want is what we should be able to expect because it is only just, is something we need to make crystal clear, then, and persistently. How?

God is ultimately the One upon Whom we can depend, especially for the impossible -- and He chose to depend upon the Fiat of one sole Virgin to enter the world so that by very virtue of all screaming “Crucify Him!” He could redeem all. We don’t know everything like God does, that’s why obedience is a straight shot to success, by God’s definition. This too is strategy. And abortion is a symptom of how each of us has been living and making choices – including jaded ones – long before it became legal seemingly overnight. And obedience says that if you stick to your guns, the parties will know not to take you for granted.

To Be or Not to Be Pro-Life?

To Be or Not to Be Pro-Life?
January 29, 2008

With the ongoing election cycles, legislative sessions, and judicial nominations, many people are using the term "pro-life" to describe themselves and others. But have you stopped to think about what this term really means? I certainly hope so, for "what does the soul yearn for more ardently than the truth?" (St. Augustine); but if not, I will provide a brief reflection on what it means to be "pro-life."

It is clear that human personhood begins at conception. Philosophers and theologians have taught this for hundreds of years. Boethius wrote at the beginning of the 6th Century, "Person is an individual substance of rational nature. As individual it is material, since matter supplies the principle of individuation. The soul is not person, only the composite is. Man alone is among the material beings person, he alone having a rational nature. He is the highest of the material beings, endowed with particular dignity and rights." The human is the only material being to be a person; other persons are purely spiritual: angels and the Trinitarian God.

Modern science confirms that human life begins at the moment of conception. It is at this point that a new human creature exists, with its own unique human genetic code. If left alone to develop according to his or her nature, this new human creature will advance through all of the stages of prenatal development, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. This creature will be the same person throughout all of his or her phases of life and even beyond natural death into everlasting life.

At the moment of the conception of a human person the entire fabric of the universe is changed forever, as a new immortal soul is created by God and mysteriously united with a new human body. It happened when you were conceived, it happened when I was conceived, and it happened when each of the 50,000,000+ aborted Americans were conceived.

Now, back to the main point of this article. What does it mean to be "pro-life"? In a nutshell, it means that we acknowledge the truth that a human being is always a human person; that the human person has an inherent right to life throughout his or her entire life cycle; and that society has a moral obligation to protect the life of that person. It is really that simple. Anyone who claims to be pro-life but who denies any part of this definition is not being intellectually honest (and is arguably not pro-life). Who was it who said, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me?" (Mt 25:40).

Here are some common examples of people claiming to be pro-life, but who are in actuality deceiving themselves and others:

1. "I am personally pro-life, but I cannot impose my morality on others." This statement denies the fact that a human person has an inherent right to life and that society has a moral obligation to protect the life of that person. We impose our morality on others when we have laws against murder, child pornography, stealing, and so on. This is the main purpose of government - to ensure the security of its citizens. Since the unborn are people, it is the duty of the government to protect them. Any law that allows the killing of unborn people is inherently unjust. To refuse to protect the unborn from abortion is to be anti-life.

2. "Abortion should be illegal, except in the case of rape or incest (or whatever other exception someone wants to throw in)." This position denies the entire definition of what it means to be pro-life. The person who is conceived in rape or incest is still a human person and must be protected from an untimely, unnatural death. Personhood does not depend upon the moral fortitude of one's parents, so the fact that one's father committed a crime (rape, incest) against one's mother does not make the resultant person any less human. The person conceived in rape or incest still has an inherent right to life (just ask Rebecca Kiessling, Jenni Maas, or any of the other outspoken people who were conceived in rape or incest and given a chance at life!). To be for abortion exceptions is to be anti-life.

3. "Human embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) is justified because it will lead to life-saving cures." This position treats the human embryo as less than a person, when in fact it is a human person. It also subjects the human embryo to a radical utilitarianism where its life is regarded as less deserving of protection than another human life, when the only differences between the two are stage of development and physical location. Since stages of development and physical locations do not determine personhood, the human embryo must always be regarded as a person and not be subjected to life-ending experimentation. While we must always value the quality of life of the sick we must never use an illicit means to achieve those ends. To be pro-ESCR is to be anti-life.

4. "Euthanasia (or "mercy killing") is sometimes the best solution for the person who is sick, his or her family, and/or society in general." The person holding this position seeks to alter the definition of person to exclude those who are sick, elderly, or disabled. It is never right to take an innocent human life, not even if that person is in terrible pain and begging you to do so. It is up to us to let the natural processes take their course, while at the same time seeking healing and medical attention as appropriate. To deny someone food and water in order to hasten death is a gross offence against the human person. To allow for euthanasia is to be anti-life.

5. "I know that my candidate is not 100% pro-life, but he or she has the best chance of beating the 100% anti-life candidate in the general election, so I'm going to support him or her rather than the 100% pro-life candidate who is still in the running." This is a tempting position to take, but it is very wrong. Because of the faulty logic behind this position, abortion is still legal today. If the entire pro-life community would stand up for only truly pro-life candidates, the entire political landscape in America would change radically for the better in six years or less. We would have a 100% pro-life president, a large majority of pro-life Senators and Representatives in Congress, a large majority of pro-life legislators in our state and county governments, and pro-life governors and executives throughout America. With all of those pro-life leaders in place, our judiciary would become full of pro-life judges. Abortion-on-demand in America would end. If you don't think this is possible, look at what happened in Croatia, where the number of abortions decreased by 90% between 1989 and 2005. To be pro-life except when "political expediency" requires you to support the more anti-life of two candidates is to be anti-life.

To apply these principles to the current presidential race, it is obvious that all of the Democrat candidates are anti-life. They all favor keeping abortion, euthanasia, ESCR, and human cloning legal.

That leaves only the Republicans as pro-life possibilities:
  • Rudy Giuliani is anti-life, as he is in favor of keeping abortion, euthanasia, and ESCR legal;
  • Mitt Romney is anti-life, as he is in favor of legal abortion for those conceived in rape or incest, he is in favor of destroying at least some human embryos for research, and he does not oppose euthanasia;
  • John McCain is anti-life, as he is in favor of legal abortion for those conceived in rape or incest and favors the legal destruction of human embryos for ESCR;
  • Mike Huckabee is seemingly pro-life;
  • Ron Paul is seemingly pro-life;
  • Alan Keyes is seemingly pro-life.

Are you pro-life?

MD State Senator Bob Hooper - Rest In Peace

We lost a great PRO-LIFE hero Thursday night (January 24th) when MD State Senator Bob Hooper went on to his eternal reward at age 71 after a long battle with cancer, which he fought and endured with great courage!

Bob Hooper was a great man because what you saw was what you got! He was an honest, hard-working man of great principle without a single ounce of guile. I can still see him campaigning on major roads in Harford County personally holding a large sign bearing his name while standing aside his modest pick-up truck.

Bob Hooper owned and operated Harford Sanitation, a large trash removal company which he founded in 1954 at age 20 with a bank loan, 2 employees, and 1 truck. When you asked him how his trash business was doing, he always answered with a smile that it was PICKING UP.
I remember attending a PRO-LIFE dinner organized by Mary Emig shortly after he was first elected to the State Senate in 1998. Bob Hooper was there, spoke, and was so grateful for our support.

Sue Melefsky remembers how Bob Hooper would always join us at the ANNUAL LIFE CHAIN in Jarrettsville each summer, often in great heat. Sue also remembers that one of his favorite Scripture passages was IF GOD BE WITH YOU, WHO CAN BE AGAINST YOU! We may not see the likes of this good and faithful servant for a long time to come!

Bob Hooper's funeral service will be this Tuesday, January 29 At Noon at the Church of the Nazarene in Bel Air. Friends may visit between 11 AM and Noon immediately before the funeral service.

Please pray for Bob's immortal soul and for his family and friends!

Presidential Candidates and the March for Life

Thanks to my Catholic blogger friend Paul for the following post, which includes the full audio of Ron Paul's speech at the March for Life rally in DC on January 22, 2008:

As was mentioned by Paul (The Regular Guy), Ron Paul was the ONLY presidential candidate to show up and stand alongside the more than 225,000 pro-life activists who showed up in DC!

John McCain, who believes it is OK to kill innocent children if they are conceived in rape or incest, sent former pro-life presidential candidate Sam Brownback to tickle our ears with his message. In it, he said, "I pledge to you to be a loyal and unswerving friend of the right to life movement." Riiiiiiight. Just like Bush the Elder and Bush Junior. The Repubican Party just keeps stringing us along and selling us on less-than-100-percent-pro-life candidates.

Well, at least McCain sent a letter for us. Romney issued a statement, but was nowhere to be seen on Tuesday.

Huckabee led a pro-life rally in Georgia, which is definitely a good sign. However, he chose to be with 5,000 pro-life Georgians rather than 225,000 pro-life Americans. I don't get it.

Where was this guy Giuliani, who "hates abortion" but wants to protect the laws that allow women to legally murder their unborn children? He must have still been in Florida somewhere, not talking about those "Constitutionalist" judges he swears he'll appoint if elected president.

I was at the March for Life on Tuesday, and I can honestly say that the only presidential candidate signs and stickers I saw were for Ron Paul. I did not see a single other candidate's name the entire day. So who do you think will be the most committed to our cause? The ones who didn't think it was important enough to even send people to hand out their stickers and signs or the one who showed up and marched with us?

I pick Ron Paul.

March for Life 2008 - Happy 1st Birthday to This Blog

It was one year ago yesterday that I was walking beside my brother-in-law, Rick Martel, in the 2007 March for Life in Washington, DC, when he said, "Joe, you need to start writing. Get your message out there!"

I took his advice, and on January 25th, 2007, I posted my first blog article: March for Life 2007.

It sure has been an interesting year! Here are some highlights:

I pray that 2008 will be the year everyone sees the true evil of abortion and we put an end to abortion in Maryland and in America!

Help Andy Harris Win - Leafleting Volunteers Needed

Dear Fellow Pro-Life Activist,

As you know, PRO-LIFE State Senator Andy Harris is running for Congress in the First Congressional District. This seat is held by long time pro-abort Republican Wayne Gilchrest. Pro-abort State Senator E. J. Pipken has also jumped into the Republican Primary which will be held on February 12.

Andy has been a great PRO-LIFE leader in his 10 years in the State Senate as well as a great fiscal conservative. He is also a great doctor, a great father of 5, and a great patriot. Andy's father, also a doctor, was a prisoner in a Russian Concentration Camp during World War ll. That's one reason why Andy has such a great love for the precious gift of FREEDOM with which we are so blessed as Americans and which is so much under attack by the LIBERALS and NEOCONS who control our country's destiny in Washington.

If Andy wins the February 12 primary, he most likely will win the general election in November in this predominately Republican district. He could serve in Congress for many years and become the next Henry Hyde, Chris Smith, and Bob Dornan all rolled into one! He would represent the First District, Maryland, America, and the PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT with dedication, honor and courage! I can almost hear him now as he is speaking at the January 22, 2009 MARCH FOR LIFE in Washington and all of us from Maryland are screaming our guts out as he concludes his great talk.

But this can only happen if he WINS on February 12! Here is what you can do to make his victory a reality on February 12!

Travel to the Eastern Shore of Maryland WITH ME early on the Sunday Mornings of January 27, February 3, and February 10 to leaflet churches on his behalf. We would meet in Annapolis about 7 AM at the Naval Marine Corps Stadium on Rowe Boulevard and carpool from there to the Eastern Shore to leaflet. We would be back home by mid-afternoon each Sunday.

Our leafleting efforts could easily be the margin of victory for Andy in this HOTLY CONTESTED RACE just as they were when PRO-LIFERS like you helped State Senator Nancy Jacobs nose out a PRO-ABORT CATHOLIC by a whisker back in 1998!

So CALL ME, CALL ME, CALL ME if I can count on you on any or all of these Sundays JANUARY 27, FEBRUARY 3, and FEBRUARY 10. Remember, it is only 3 Sundays that we are asking you to sacrifice for GOD, COUNTRY & FAMILY! What a small price to pay!

Thanks!

Right to Free Speech Restored for Maryland Pro-Life Advocates

A Victory for Defend Life, the Alliance Defense Fund, and Pro-Life Advocates in Maryland!

Revised sign policy ensures protection of free speech rights for Maryland pro-life advocates

Montgomery County officials agree to resolve lawsuit filed by ADF attorneys

BALTIMORE — A group of pro-life advocates represented by attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund will no longer be threatened with fines for holding signs on a public sidewalk. As part of an agreement to resolve the lawsuit, Montgomery County, Md., officials have agreed to drop a written policy that banned holding signs and caused County officials to silence pro-life citizens.

“Pro-life advocates should not be fined for exercising their First Amendment right to free speech,” said ADF Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. “We are pleased that Montgomery County officials have revised their policy regarding signs and will no longer censor those who choose to peacefully express their views on a public sidewalk.”

On July 31, approximately 40 pro-life advocates with the group Defend Life gathered at an intersection in Montgomery County in an attempt to present their message to passing motorists. A representative of the Department of Permitting Services told the sign-holders that they were violating state and county laws that prohibit holding signs on a public sidewalk.

In addition, the group was told that it must immediately remove the signs or pay a fine of $500 per sign. The group left the area rather than pay the fines. ADF attorneys filed suit on behalf of the pro-life advocates Oct. 12 (www.telladf.org/news/story.aspx?cid=4270).

On Jan. 9, county officials sent a letter to Defend Life, expressing “regret that there was a misunderstanding on the part of the county personnel” and stating that they “sincerely regret any actions that risked impairment of the rights to assembly and free speech.” The letter may be read at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/DefendLifeLetter.pdf.

For more than three years, a policy posted on the county Web site stated that the holding or waving of signs was prohibited. That policy is now dropped as part of settlement of the lawsuit, Defend Life v. Montgomery County, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Northern Division.

ADF (http://www.telladf.org/) is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.

Commentary: Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say

This is the second in a series of columns by my friend, Anna Maria Agolli:

Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say
Know What You're Saying
by Anna Maria Agolli

When we say we’re pro-life, are we identifying ourselves with a political group to which we feel safe belonging? Does pro-life only apply to laws about murder?

God gave Moses His Name and His Commandments. And He warned the Israelites through Moses to choose life rather than death, blessing rather than curse. To be truly pro-life is to be obedient in actively effecting God’s Word in all one’s transactions and to take on the character of that Word, of the Author.

You are what you eat, they say. Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and became wounded. Had they obeyed, they would have eaten of the Tree of Life instead. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would have taken on the character of that Fruit by actively ingesting it, of course, but first by ingesting the act of obedience itself, which would have made them immutable. It was the act of disobedience that wounded Adam and Eve, not the fruit because God Himself created the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil although He told Adam and Eve not to eat it. The food of obedience procures Knowledge of the Author, which procures Eternal Life.

Commentary: What's in a word? The Word

This is the first in a series of columns by my friend, Anna Maria Agolli:

What's in a word? The Word
by Anna Maria Agolli

There are the two sides, pro-life and pro-abortion. There are other words used to describe these positions -- anti-abortion, pro-death, pro-abortion, and so forth -- and they are used interchangeably at times. But are they really interchangeable terms?

Is pro-choice really neutral and therefore not destructive by virtue of its tolerance and inaction? Isn't pro-abortion really pro-death, rather than supportive of a woman's right? Is anti-abortion the same as pro-life, and does pro-life only apply to the murder of children in the womb? And so forth. If one thinks about these terms, one can say what one means and mean what one says, and … know what one is saying. By our words we can transform the world.

What does it mean to be pro-life, really? Life is the name of God, I AM THAT AM. It speaks to being LIFE itself, which is not only existence but a dynamic of purpose and destiny. And LIFE begets LIFE, gives LIFE, defends LIFE, not just in the womb, but also in the sickbed of the elderly and the infirm, all persons in all states of life and in all conditions and situations. Pro-Life is not touching what God gave us that can only come from God and that therefore only God can touch. Pro-Life, rather, is revering and serving it in worship of it's Creator, WHO IS LIFE itself.

Seemingly Pro-Life Alternative to Embryonic Stem Cells Really Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

News Flash from Children of God for Life (http://www.cogforlife.org/):

Adult Stem Cells Reprogrammed Using Aborted Fetal and embryonic stem cells - Moral Methods could have been used:

(Tennessee) Children of God for Life reports that a recent stem cell breakthrough that turns adult skin cells to “embryonic” is not a pro-life solution as currently done. On November 21st and 22nd, Dr. Shinya Yamanaka and Dr James Thomson published back-to-back studies that were hailed as moral alternatives to embryonic stem cell research. Both studies involved introducing genes into adult stem cells through a lentivirus, which reprogrammed them to become “embryonic” or induced pluripotent stem (IPS) cells, without destroying human embryos. But pro-lifers may have celebrated too soon, without studying the methods used in the papers.

Both researchers used several versions of the 293 aborted fetal cell lines to modify the DNA of the host adult skin cells, in order to accomplish the reprogramming.

“Unless you read the papers published by Dr Yamanaka in Cell and Dr Thomson in Science, you would have no idea where the DNA came from that was used to transform the adult cells”, stated Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of Children of God for Life, a pro-life watchdog organization focused on stem cell research and aborted fetal cell lines in medical products. “And even then you would have to know what you were looking for to understand it”, she added.

For example, while Dr Yamanaka reports using PLAT-E, PLAT-A and 293FT cells in his paper, the proper name for these cell lines is HEK (human embryonic kidney) 293. The cells were obtained from an electively aborted baby by Dr. Alex Van der Eb, Crucell NV, the same company producing aborted fetal cell line PER C6, derived from the retinal tissue of an 18-week gestation baby.

In the second study, Dr James Thomson of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, also used aborted fetal cell line 293FT to produce DNA used to modify adult cells. Furthermore, Dr Thomson obtained the DNA sequences he used from human ES cells. And before using foreskin fibroblasts, Thomson tested the reprogramming on IMR-90 aborted fetal cell line, taken from the lung tissue of a 16-week gestation female baby.

“Pro-lifers may be deceived by the excitement about these publications”, Vinnedge cautioned. “Using aborted fetal and embryonic stem cells from deliberately destroyed human beings is certainly not any kind of moral victory.”

Vinnedge noted that the research is fraught with other moral and clinical problems, such as fatal tumors, which are a well-documented attribute of embryonic stem cells, and which also occurred with the adult reprogrammed IPS cells. And while Yamanaka and Thomson allege the new cells generated would be “patient specific” with no immune rejection problems, this claim is premature because there is foreign DNA present from the lentivirus used to modify the cells.

However, it is not necessary to use aborted fetal cells to produce the lentivirus at all, noted Dr Theresa Deisher, R&D Director of Ave Maria Biotechnology Company, a research firm dedicated to pro-life alternatives for unethical human therapeutics.

“There are other ethical ways to produce the DNA needed for transformation, efficiently and morally,” said Dr Deisher. “If these means were employed to produce the needed DNA, there would be no moral issues with the use of reprogrammed adult cells for research.”

NH Pro-Lifer Confronts Huckabee on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

This is from a friend of mine in New Hampshire:

Here is video of my encounter with Mike Huckabee on Dec. 1, 2007, attempting to ask him if he would reconsider his support for taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research.

Here is the email that I sent him on Dec. 1, 2007 to which he never responded.

Dear Governor Huckabee,

Thank you for taking my question at the McGinley home in Bedford, NH on Saturday Dec. 1, 2007.

I'm submitting my question via email, just as you graciously requested.

Success in any form of embryonic stem cell research would create a demand for the cloning and murder of human embryos. I'll explain.

Assume that you needed healthy cardiac tissue. If one is to take advantage of any success in said research, the doctor would first clone you. This is what is often referred to as therapeutic cloning.

He would then kill your embryonic twin, take his stem cells, and generate new tissue that would not be rejected by your body.

That the purpose of this research is therapeutic cloning, renders any embryonic stem cell research immoral. This is true whether it is conducted on lines that have existed for years, or on lines that have been newly derived via the homicide of new human embryos.

I do not question your respect for life. This issue is one that is easily overlooked. However, given this understanding, would you pledge to no longer force the taxpayer to fund immoral research which, even if successful, has no moral applications? Please let me know when you remove this bullet point from your website.

Thanks again for your generosity. Keep up the good fight against the homicide of all human beings, regardless of geographic location.

USCG Officer Opposes Vaccine Derived from Aborted Baby
